Action: Continue to build the habit of having water with you and drinking it often.

One of things I want you to do today is to take a detailed inventory of the soft drinks, sodas, juices, or other high-calorie beverages you have around the house that need to be eliminated.

I encourage you to throw them ALL out. Toss the empty calories! If the waste troubles you, take what you have to a shelter, or food bank.

Start with tossing out the soft drinks and then slowly cut down your juice consumption. As soon as you're done with the juices you have, buy no more. If you want a little juice make it apple, orange, grapefruit, or something similar but not from concentrate.

Remember, in place of soda or juice, drink water!

This article showed up in my email today - what timing!

While diet soda is a better choice than full-sugar drinks, they aren’t free of health risks. A new study has found that anything more than one diet soda a day may increase one’s risk of decreased kidney function.

The study was conducted by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. They examined the effects of sodium and artificial sweeteners on kidney function among 3,256 women with a median age of 67. The women filled out a questionnaire about their soda drinking habits.

When the researchers compared the women’s kidney function, they found that 372 had a decline of 30 percent or more in kidney function. Further analysis revealed that the decline was associated with drinking two or more artificially sweetened soft drinks a day.

The researchers also took into consideration the person’s age, physical activity, high blood pressure, or if they had diabetes.

Diet drinks are “generally low in important health-promoting nutrients, so keeping them as a small part of your eating plan would be a smart step,” says Dr. Connie Diekman, director of university nutrition for Washington University, St. Louis.

In 2006, a panel of experts was assembled by Dr. Barry Popkin, director of the University of North Carolina Interdisciplinary Obesity Program. The group published a “Beverage Guidance System,” that recommended people drink more water and limit or even eliminate high-calorie beverages with little or no nutritional value. The panel emphasized that kids need to drink more milk. “Fortified soy milk is a good alternative for individuals who prefer not to consume cow milk,” the panel stated.

Thank goodness juice has never appealed to me. I am bad for diet soda though I know that. I also have 2 ice javas made with skim milk a day. I excuse the sugar away though as I have convinced myself at least I am getting milk as I never drink milk - don't care for the taste. I have recently discovered herbal, green, white, red, teas and really enjoy the variety they have to offer. Will work on my water though - have to beat 7 that is for sure.

Juice has not been in our house for many years. I keep a few of those drinking boxes for the grandchildren. I like diet root beer once in a while just to curb a sweet "binge". Doesn't always work, though. 1000 mg. Tums for me in place of milk drinking, Rhonda. My doc. says OK, check with yours?? I also do a multi vitamin, D and extra C.

drank most of my water today (was not home most of the day) My first reaction to throwing out my diet coke was "NOOOOOOOOO" But, I have consumed only half of what I normally do.All the extra water is helping there. Not drinking the coke gives me a headache,(caffeine withdrawal) I am going to have less and less until I am done with it. Plus the increase in price of pop has also helped to want to cut it out as money can be better spent on some fresh fruit.
Fruit juice has not been something we have in the house since I joined TOPS and discovered just how many pieces of fruit go into to making just one glass full! Better to have the fruit and get the benefits of the fiber too.

I got in 7 glasses yesterday. I didn't have any juice yesterday, and Harley and Shaun took the liberty of clearing our inventory haha.

Kathy buy yourself one of those stainless steel water bottles --you will get your money back in no time from the money you save from buying soda --fill it up and away you go.....

they are usually around 8 - 10 dollars for stainless steel
